UAE Labour Law in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the capital Emirate of the UAE and the largest by area. For private-sector employment in Abu Dhabi subject to the federal UAE Labour Law, the gratuity rules are the same as across the rest of the UAE: Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, Article 51. The formula — 21 days per year for the first 5 years and 30 days per year beyond 5 years — is federal, not Emirate-specific.

Abu Dhabi Special Employment Regimes

  • ADGM (Abu Dhabi Global Market): ADGM is a financial free zone on Al Maryah Island that operates under its own legal system, including its own Employment Regulations. End-of-service entitlements for ADGM employees differ from the federal framework. Consult ADGM or a qualified legal professional.
  • Abu Dhabi Government employees: UAE nationals employed in the government sector are typically covered by a pension scheme rather than the standard private-sector gratuity. Rules differ significantly.
  • KIZAD / Abu Dhabi free zones: Workers in Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi and other free zones should verify their applicable framework.

Frequently Asked Questions — Abu Dhabi

Does Abu Dhabi have different gratuity rules from Dubai?
No, for workers subject to the federal UAE Labour Law. The gratuity formula is the same across all Emirates for general private-sector employment. Differences arise only in specific free zones (like ADGM in Abu Dhabi or DIFC in Dubai) that operate under their own legal frameworks.
I work for an Abu Dhabi government entity. Is this calculator for me?
Likely not. UAE nationals employed by Abu Dhabi government entities are typically covered by a separate pension scheme managed by GPSSA (General Pension and Social Security Authority). The standard private-sector gratuity calculator does not apply to this category. Consult your HR department or GPSSA for details.
What is ADGM and how does it affect gratuity?
ADGM (Abu Dhabi Global Market) is an international financial centre on Al Maryah Island with its own legal and regulatory framework. Companies registered in ADGM are subject to ADGM Employment Regulations for employment matters, which differ from federal UAE Labour Law. If your employer is registered in ADGM, this calculator may not apply. Verify with your employer or the ADGM Registration Authority.
